We recommend salon visits every 6-8 weeks to maintain the
haircut shape and skin health. Cockapoos grow almost continuously, so regular trimming is essential for their hygiene. Delaying appointments often results in the need for a very short clip due to a felted layer near the skin. In Marki, we maintain a regular client calendar to provide dogs with systematic and stress-free care.
A standard session in our salon includes thorough
brushing, a
bath with double shampooing and conditioner, and precise trimming. A key point is the plucking and cleaning of
ears, which in this breed are very prone to infections due to lack of ventilation. We also trim the
nails and take care of the hygiene around the paw pads, where burrs from the Marki meadows often get stuck. Each stage is adapted to the dog's temperament to build positive associations.
The most popular style is the 'Teddy Bear Cut', which gives the Cockapoo a plush bear appearance thanks to a rounded head and full legs. At Brego, we also frequently perform 'sport' clips, shorter on the torso, which makes it easier for owners to keep the dog clean. Skillful blending of transitions is important so the dog looks natural and aesthetic even several weeks after the visit. We always adjust the hair length to the dog's activity level and the time the owner can devote to brushing.
The biggest challenge is
matting that forms under the armpits, behind the ears, and in the groins, which often hurts the dog when trying to brush them out. Owners often mistake brushing the top layer for full care, resulting in a 'shell' of felt right at the skin. Another issue is tear stains under the eyes, requiring daily hygiene and proper trimming of hair in the corners. Very heavy hair growth in the ear canal of a Cockapoo can lead to chronic inflammation if not regularly removed.
At home, it is essential to brush the dog at least 3-4 times a week using a slicker brush and a long-toothed metal comb. We recommend the 'layered brushing' method, starting from the bottom and moving upwards to ensure you have reached the skin. Use detangling sprays that close the hair cuticle and prevent breakage. After every walk around Marki, it is worth checking if branches or burrs have tangled into the dog's long 'furnishings'.
The first adaptation visit at Brego should take place right after the quarantine period, around 3-4 months of age. We teach the puppy the touch of tools, the sound of the clipper, and standing on the table, which pays off with calmness during future full treatments. At home, the owner should massage the paws and look into the ears daily so the dog gets used to these actions. The first puppy trim focuses on the eye area, paws, and hygiene, without drastically changing the pet's appearance yet.
